Mt Hotham — vertical structure, 0–3 days

The shape of the modelled column above this mountain: temperature and wet-bulb against height, humidity beside it, and four restrained readings of what that shape is. Up to nine requested pressure levels, sparse and terrain-filtered, not a sounding — /now has the surface observations, which are measurements and are deliberately kept separate from this.

Modelled vertical profile

Temperature, wet-bulb and relative humidity against metres above sea level

Full column · surface through the highest genuine supplied level.

Mt Hotham — full column profile, 0–3 days Full column view for Mt Hotham, from 1200 to 5800 metres above sea level. The complete genuine profile is drawn through the highest supplied level. Two panels share the same linear vertical axis. The left panel plots the selected model's dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature against height between -34 and 8 degrees Celsius, with a zero-degree reference, the model's own grid terrain shaded at its base, and the resort's lowest and highest lifted elevations marked. The right panel plots relative humidity on a fixed nought to one hundred per cent scale with the 80 per cent moist-layer threshold marked. Dots mark the pressure levels the model actually supplies, labelled in hectopascals on the right; the lines are straight interpolation between those levels and stop at the highest one supplied. Nothing is drawn above it. 2000 3000 4000 5000 -30 -20 -10 0 0 °C 0 25 50 75 100 80% top 1845 m village 1765 m base 1450 m Temperature °C — dry-bulb and wet-bulb Relative humidity % m hPa ECMWF IFS, valid Mon 3 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Mon 3 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Mon 3 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Mon 3 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Tue 4 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Tue 4 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Tue 4 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Tue 4 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Wed 5 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Wed 5 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Wed 5 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF IFS, valid Wed 5 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Mon 3 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Mon 3 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Mon 3 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Mon 3 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Tue 4 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Tue 4 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Tue 4 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Tue 4 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Wed 5 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Wed 5 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Wed 5 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 ECMWF AIFS, valid Wed 5 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 700 600 500 GFS, valid Mon 3 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Mon 3 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Mon 3 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Mon 3 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Tue 4 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Tue 4 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Tue 4 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Tue 4 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Wed 5 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Wed 5 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Wed 5 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 GFS, valid Wed 5 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Mon 3 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Mon 3 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Mon 3 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Mon 3 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Tue 4 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Tue 4 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Tue 4 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Tue 4 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Wed 5 00:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Wed 5 06:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Wed 5 12:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500 ICON, valid Wed 5 18:00 model grid terrain 1444 m sfc 850 800 700 600 500

Calculation method

Every level plotted here is the model’s own pressure-level temperature and humidity, taken from the same profile the snow level on the 3–7 day pages is derived from — the same builder, the same pressure-aware wet-bulb, and the same rule discarding levels that lie below the model’s own terrain. Nothing is recalculated for this page. This product requests 1000/925/850/700/600/500 hPa for ECMWF IFS and AIFS; GFS and ICON add 950/900/800. Unsupported or all-null triplets remain absent. Nothing is drawn or inferred beyond the highest genuine level supplied. Lines between two dots are straight interpolation between adjacent supplied levels and nothing more; at an alpine grid point those levels are routinely 1.5 km apart, so a real melting layer, cold pool or shallow inversion inside that gap is invisible here. Full column and Mountain detail are two linear display scales over these same levels and diagnostics; Mountain detail stops drawing above 700 hPa but does not recalculate or discard the complete profile. Moist depth uses a descriptive 80% relative-humidity threshold across adjacent supplied levels: it describes where the model is humid, and is not a cloud or snowfall detection. Dendritic-growth overlap is reported only where the supplied levels genuinely bracket -12 to -18 °C; where they stop warmer than that, the answer is “not covered by the supplied levels”, which is a statement about the data and not about the atmosphere. None of this is converted into a snowfall amount or a snow-quality score. Background

Complete supplied-profile diagnostics

Uses every genuine supplied level through the profile top, regardless of the selected chart view.

Supplied levels
the model surface, 850 hPa, 700 hPa, 600 hPa, 500 hPa — 5 levels spanning 1444–5656 m (4212 m).
Lowest-layer lapse rate
-2.4 °C/km between the model surface (1444 m) and 850 hPa (1526 m) — temperature rises with height. Measured across 82 m, so it is a layer average and cannot resolve structure inside that depth.
Modelled inversions
  • 1444–1526 m (the model surface to 850 hPa): 3.2 °C rising to 3.4 °C, 2.4 °C/km of warming over 82 m.
A feature of this coarse model profile, not an observed inversion. It may equally be an artefact of interpolating a wide grid over steep terrain.
Moist-layer depth
82 m contiguous at or above 80% RH, 1444–1526 m across the model surface, 850 hPa (lowest 91%). Descriptive moisture depth — where the model is humid. Not proof of cloud, and not proof of snowfall.
Dendritic growth range (-12 to -18 °C)
Covered by the supplied levels The supplied levels bracket both bounds: -12 °C at 4613 m and -18 °C at 5459 m, interpolated between adjacent supplied levels. Overlap is a property of this profile’s temperature structure — it is not a statement that snow is growing there.

Supplied levels
the model surface, 850 hPa, 700 hPa, 600 hPa, 500 hPa — 5 levels spanning 1444–5604 m (4160 m).
Lowest-layer lapse rate
-6.2 °C/km between the model surface (1444 m) and 850 hPa (1508 m) — temperature rises with height. Measured across 64 m, so it is a layer average and cannot resolve structure inside that depth.
Modelled inversions
  • 1444–1508 m (the model surface to 850 hPa): 0.2 °C rising to 0.6 °C, 6.2 °C/km of warming over 64 m.
A feature of this coarse model profile, not an observed inversion. It may equally be an artefact of interpolating a wide grid over steep terrain.
Moist-layer depth
64 m contiguous at or above 80% RH, 1444–1508 m across the model surface, 850 hPa (lowest 90%). Descriptive moisture depth — where the model is humid. Not proof of cloud, and not proof of snowfall.
Dendritic growth range (-12 to -18 °C)
Covered by the supplied levels The supplied levels bracket both bounds: -12 °C at 4047 m and -18 °C at 5213 m, interpolated between adjacent supplied levels. Overlap is a property of this profile’s temperature structure — it is not a statement that snow is growing there.

Supplied levels
the model surface, 850 hPa, 700 hPa, 600 hPa, 500 hPa — 5 levels spanning 1444–5591 m (4147 m).
Lowest-layer lapse rate
30.9 °C/km between the model surface (1444 m) and 850 hPa (1512 m) — at or above the dry adiabatic rate. Measured across 68 m, so it is a layer average and cannot resolve structure inside that depth.
Modelled inversions
None between adjacent supplied levels. That is not the same as no inversion: one shallower than the gap between two levels would not appear here at all.
Moist-layer depth
No two adjacent supplied levels are both at or above 80% RH, so no depth can be measured. A single humid level is not a depth.
Dendritic growth range (-12 to -18 °C)
Covered by the supplied levels The supplied levels bracket both bounds: -12 °C at 3917 m and -18 °C at 4880 m, interpolated between adjacent supplied levels. Overlap is a property of this profile’s temperature structure — it is not a statement that snow is growing there.

What this page does not claim
  • This is a model profile, not a sounding. There is no radiosonde in it. The nearest upper-air site to the Australian Alps is hundreds of kilometres away, and no observed sounding is drawn on this chart — nor is the surface observation from /now, which is one instrument at one height and would be a fabrication if plotted as a column.
  • Coverage is sparse and model-dependent. Below-terrain levels are already excluded, which at an alpine grid point routinely removes 1000 and 925 hPa. An ECMWF profile includes 850, 700, 600 and 500 hPa above the surface when all requested triplets are present.
  • Nothing is extrapolated above the requested 500 hPa level. Where the dendritic range sits above the supplied profile top, the page says the supplied levels do not cover it — never that there is no dendritic zone.
  • No amount, no score. Deeper moisture and a bracketed dendritic range are structural facts about the profile. Turning them into centimetres or a “powder rating” would be inventing a number the data cannot support.
  • ACCESS-G has no point profile here. Its Open-Meteo domain has not initialised since June 2025 and returns an all-null series; an empty profile with a model’s name on it is worse than no chart. The Bureau’s current ACCESS-G chart products are available in the app’s live ACCESS-G map viewer.
